Fresh Peach and Candied Ginger Shortcakes

INGREDIENTS

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
3/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/3 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling1 tsp. salt
12 Tbs. (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, plus melted butter for brushing
3/4 tsp. finely grated lemon zest
1/2 cup finely chopped candied ginger
1 cup plus 2 Tbs. buttermilk
3/4 cup caramel sauce
3 very ripe peaches, halved, pitted and sliced
1 1/2 cups heavy cream, whipped to soft peaks with 1 Tbs. sugar

DIRECTIONS

Preheat an oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the flat beater, sift together the 3 1/2 cups flour, the baking powder, baking soda, the 1/3 cup sugar and the salt.
Add the 12 Tbs. butter and the lemon zest. Beat on low speed until the butter forms pea-size pieces, 2 to 4 minutes. Add the candied ginger and beat until just incorporated, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add the buttermilk and beat until the dough just comes together, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Turn off the mixer and, using a rubber spatula, scrape the bottom of the bowl and stir to blend in all the dry ingredients.

Transfer the dough to a floured work surface. Lightly dust the top of the dough with flour and gently pat into a large round, 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick. Using a 3-inch biscuit cutter, cut out 6 rounds. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet, spacing the biscuits at least 1/2 inch apart. Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar. Bake until the biscuits are lightly browned on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 25 to 35 minutes. Transfer the baking sheet to a wire rack and let cool for 10 minutes, then transfer the biscuits to the rack and let cool completely, at least 15 minutes more.

To assemble the shortcakes, cut the biscuits in half horizontally and place the bottom halves, cut side up, on individual plates. Spoon 2 Tbs. of the caramel sauce onto each bottom half. Top each with half of a sliced peach and a large spoonful of whipped cream. Top with the remaining biscuit halves, cut side down.
Serves 6.

This July 4th we stood on a dock at Green Lake waiting for the fireworks to begin strobing the dark sky above Seattle. Except for the occasional pop of a bottle rocket, it was peaceful there, quiet. Our 9-month old daughter slept in her car-seat. My parents stood nearby holding hands. The water lapped against the dock pilings and nobody said anything.

As we kept looking skyward I had this strange thought that if everyone came out each night just to listen and watch the sky like this then the word would be different somehow. Better.
And then the fireworks started, far away, the muffled booms arriving several seconds after the flaring colors. Layla sensed the excitement and woke up and we lifted her to watch the display, her first. She smiled and reached her hands out as if trying to grab what she saw.

After it was over my mom said “Well, if she’s lucky she’ll have another 100 years of fireworks.”
It got me thinking about just what she might see in her lifetime, and what I’d still like to see in mine. There is so much out there, and on the other hand, so much less wilderness and wildlife. Sometimes it feels like we’re racing against time to experience something or somewhere before whatever it is that makes it special has been exhausted, used up, crowded out.
And yet the experiences we seek as “once in a lifetime,” the ones Josh Lew and other Matador community members have collected here, have a way of transcending time. Whether single events or processes that take weeks, months, or years, these experiences remind us that the world remains a magical place.

50 Things to do Before you Die

1. Set foot on each of the seven continents. Antarctica might be a tough one, but once you’ve reached all seven you can truly call yourself a world traveler.
2. Cross a country on a bicycle. A bicycle tour takes some planning, but it beats being separated from a country though a passenger-side window.
3. Ride something bigger than a horse. Trekking through the jungle on the back of a two story tall elephant will surely be something you remember forever.

4. Live like a local for a month. The experience of visiting native peoples will give you way more insight into another way of life than two years hopping from one backpacker ghetto to the next.
5. Visit a “real” blues bar in Chicago. What better way to leave music’s commercialism behind and find the soul of the blues?

Etsy has so much to offer shoppers — it's like a whole universe! In this Facts and Fancies series, I'll take you on a tour through Etsy's Categories. As we visit these "planets" one by one, we'll talk to sellers and experts and find some of extraordinary items on Etsy. (We'll also get some great insider tips along the way.) In this edition, we'll be cruising through the Bath and Beauty Category's Soaps, Salts, Scrubs and Bath Bombs, Lip Balm, Lotions, Deodorant, Fragrances, and last but not least, Men's products (and if that's not enough, look for Part 2 next week where we'll cover more types of items).

I hadn't thought of Bath and Beauty products as an art form before I found Etsy. These artisans and experts have convinced me that Bath and Beauty items have a unique role to play in the handmade universe: "Bath and Beauty products are so personal. You're exposed — often when you're naked — when you use them on your skin," says Donna Maria Coles Johnson, a small beauty business expert and the founder and CEO of IndieBeauty.com. "It's a sensory experience. Your personality connects with these scented products, and when they are handmade, the emotional experience is heightened. Memories are triggered by scents and the interaction between buyer and maker makes the entire process, from shopping to buying to using, that much more enjoyable."

You can think of these sellers as artists and their medium not as paint but, for instance, oils and bases, scents, salts and liquids. As soaper swanmountainsoaps put it, "The great – or terrible – thing about being a soaper is that EVERYTHING inspires you to make soap! I was looking at an amazing sunrise yesterday, with incredibly sharp hues of purple, hot pink and orange, and I thought, 'What a great bar of soap that would make!' Even your breakfast inspires you."

One of the best things about Etsy's Bath and Beauty Category is that you can contact a seller and ask for a custom order or ask about particular ingredients. Donna Maria points out that, while natural and organic items are currently very sought-after, it's important for shoppers to know what they are looking for. "For example, 'natural' is defined by the person using the term," she says. "It can mean 'vegan' — no animal products — to one person and 'organic' to another. Donna Maria urges shoppers to look for ingredient listings at seller websites so you know exactly what's in a product before you buy it, and also, to ask sellers questions before you buy. "Transparency and clarity is important when you're buying personal care products for your family," she says.

Speaking of transparency...Do you know how Bath and Beauty products are made? There's a lot of chemistry involved (and you can find out more from the links below under Further Resources). But here's a core factoid to get you started:

Fragrance oils vs. Essential oils — According to Donna Maria, fragrance oils are either 100% synthetic or partially synthetic. Essential oils, on the other hand, if they are not adulterated, are the 100% natural, steam-distilled essence from plant materials such as tree bark, herbs or flowers. Contrary to the what you
might assume, essential oils are not "oily" in texture, but have a watery liquid feel. If a product is unscented, it usually means there are no essential oils or fragrance oils in the product, and to the extent you can smell anything, it's a result of scents contributed by something else, such as a base ingredient like olive oil for example. If smell of any kind is important to you, it's best to ask the seller if the product has a scent of any kind, regardless of where it comes from.

Soaps

Classic, pure handmade soap is one of the most popular items to purchase on Etsy. Once you start trying some different soaps, you might get hooked! It's easy because "many soapers offer sample packs in their shops so customers can get a feel for their products," says swanmountainsoaps. "These are a great way to acquaint a skeptical friend with the beauty of handmade soap!"

Because soap is such a personal item, you should talk to a seller about any skin sensitivities you might have. As swanmountainsoaps put it, "Any reputable soaper will tell you all of the ingredients in their products, whether they make soap from a base or from scratch, because so many people these days have allergies or sensitive skin. Just saying a soap is made from 'olive oil' or 'glycerin' or 'soap base' doesn’t tell you if the product might contain a possible allergen like a nut oil, or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) or sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) – detergents that can cause skin irritation in some people."

When you're browsing Soap in Bath and Beauty, you may encounter a bit of soapy jargon. swanmountainsoaps explains:

Cold Process (CP) and Hot Process (HP) — These are soaps made from scratch. It's an art and a science, and many soapers tweak their formulas for years, adding a percent of this or that oil here and there to find the perfect "recipe" for a soap that cleanses and yet conditions.

Melt and Pour (M&P) — Melt and pour soap, on the other hand, is already soap when you buy it. M&P soapers buy their base, melt it and add color and fragrance, plus sometimes other ingredients (ground oatmeal, for example) to "tweak" the base and make it their own. Usually the amazing shapes you see (like
LaveMeSoapCo's awesome camera soap or LoveLeeSoaps's hotdog soap) and most clear soaps are made from a base. “Re-batched” soap has been made using the CP or HP method, melted down again, played with, and re-poured into a mold (this is also sometimes referred to as “hand-milled” soap).

For cold or hot process soap, a soaper adds lye to liquid (usually water), and then adds that mixture to their oils. But why stick with water? swanmountainsoaps points out that soapers "can add beer (such as the one on the right from thebeersoapcompany), goat’s milk, coconut milk, wine, coffee…each of these lends a different quality to the soap. For example, beer soap is known for its amazing lather. Strong coffee added to soap can help remove kitchen odors from your hands. Goat's milk is chock full of emollients, vitamins and triglycerides that have long been known to work wonders on the skin."

"There are soap spa bars made with almost 50 percent salt like this one from magichands, scrubby soaps that help exfoliate away dead skin, soap bars made to shampoo your hair with," continues swanmountainsoaps. "Soaps can be left in their naturally beautiful state or colored. They can be scented with EOs (essential oils) or FOs (fragrance oils). And, they don’t always come in solid form! There is whipped soap, liquid soap, gel soap," even special soap just for shaving.

urbaneden confessed to me, "I don't shave my legs in the winter. I wear jeans or opaque tights. And my husband's an old hippie, heh. He doesn't care. But come spring, I want to bare my legs and I want them to be hair-free. Before I started making my Smooth Legs Shaving Bars, the annual spring shearing was no fun." When I asked what makes a great shaving bar, she replied, "Lots of clay to help the razor glide. Lots of castor and coconut oils to produce a great lather. Lots of skin-softening ingredients like olive oil and shea butter."

I was curious about the crazy diversity of soaps on Etsy, so I did a random search and found everything from honeydew to dentures. Go ahead and try a random word!

Salts, Scrubs & Bath Bombs
And you thought baths were just about getting clean! Donna Maria loves bath bombs that are just plain fun. She's personally drawn to "anything citrus...lemon, lime, orange" and recalled GrumpyGirl as a shop that "jumped off the page." (Check out GrumpyGirl's hilarious descriptions!)

swanmountainsoaps gives us the inside scoop on how to make bath-time the best:

Bath Bombs — A great way to add a little fun to the bath! And, for women or kids who can't use bubble baths (for some people, they can lead to urinary tract infections, which are no fun at all), these are a great alternative. Bath bombs are made from a combination of an acid (such as citric acid) and a base (such as baking soda) plus color, fragrance, and sometimes other ingredients like glitter or confetti. For a more luxurious bath bomb, a seller will add an oil such as shea butter or cocoa butter that melts into your bath water and helps moisturize your skin.

Bath Salts — These can turn an ordinary bath into an amazingly soothing experience. Often, a combination of salts is used, such as Epsom salts, mineral salts, Dead Sea salts — even Bolivian Pink Salt. As you soak in the salts, your body can actually absorb minerals like magnesium and sulfates. BellaLunaCrafts's Sweet Bay Rose bath salts, for example, are made with Epsom salts. Scrubs — An invigorating way way to pamper dry or tired skin. It may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes the best thing to do for dry skin is to exfoliate those dry skin cells away! Sugar and salt scrubs are very popular, but exotic scrubs made with crushed walnut shells, cranberry seeds, ground apricot kernels, ground orange peel, or ground loofah work quite well also.

Once that layer of dead skin is gone, that new skin underneath is ready to soak up the moisture!

Lip Balm

Aside from being an absolutely omnipresent must-have in my purse, good lip balm makes a great little extra element to any gift. Turns out these little sticks have stories to tell. Seller morganstreet, who is originally from England, told me she looks "back to my childhood there when thinking up new scents. For example: My Turkish Delight Lip balm is named after a British sweet that I used to LOVE as a child. It’s a rose flavored jelly-like block that’s covered in yummy chocolate."

Always check for ingredients you might be allergic to. You may want to acquaint yourself with common properties of lip balm. morganstreet gives us the rundown:

Beeswax – A natural solid wax produced by honey bees. Beeswax has great conditioning and moisturizing properties.

Carnauba Wax – A solid natural vegetable wax derived from the Brazilian Carnauba Palm tree.

Candelilla Wax – A solid natural plant derived wax.

Shea Butter – A solid fat derived from the fruit of the African Karite tree. Shea butter has many great benefits, including being moisturizing and an ability to penetrate the skin easily.

Jojoba Oil – Although liquid in appearance, jojoba is actually a wax. It is very similar to the skin’s natural sebum and has the ability to penetrate the skin easily.

Sweet Almond Oil – A nut oil derived from almond nuts. Rich in vitamins, it penetrates the skin easily and has great softening and conditioning properties.

Lanolin – A thick waxy substance derived from the wool of sheep. Lanolin is an excellent emollient and humectant. Humectants attract moisture from the air bringing it to the skin where it’s much needed.

Vitamin E – Acts as an antioxidant. It also helps to keep your lip balm fresher for longer, though it's not a preservative.

Color – Colorants used in lip balms should be FDA approved for use on the lips. This means that a colorant could be safe for use in a wash-off product like soap, but may not be safe for use in leave-on products like lotions or for use on the lips or eyes. If in doubt, ask your seller.

Although some of the most common ingredients used in lip balm making are animal products (beeswax, honey, milk or lanolin), it doesn’t mean that vegans are out of luck. There are plenty of Bath and Body sellers here on Etsy who make lip balm with no animal products.

morganstreet also shared this fun fact: "Did you know that flavored lip balms don’t actually have a taste? (Except for lip balms flavored with essential oils.) They are actually scented with lip-safe fragrances! When we apply lip balm to the lips, we’re actually smelling their scent. Since the nose is so close to the mouth, the brain is tricked into thinking that we’re tasting it. This experience is further enhanced with the use of sweeteners added to the lip balm to give it a sweet taste."

Deodorant

When I asked urbaneden what she wanted to tell shoppers about deodorant, she said, "I can’t remember. No, actually, that’s a little joke because I stopped using aluminum out of fear of Alzheimer’s disease, which runs in my family. The evidence linking aluminum — the active ingredient in commercial antiperspirants — with Alzheimer’s isn’t conclusive. But it’s a risk I don’t want to take. Besides, sweating is good! Sweating keeps us cool. Sweating allows our skin to breathe. Sweating sends chemical pheromones out to potential mates, maybe even leading to love at first sight. However, when the bacteria in sweat multiplies and stinks…well, I can live without that."

So she, along with many Etsy sellers, prefers to make deodorants which work not by blocking sweat, but by blocking odor. While she's seen many types of deodorants on Etsy that neutralize odors with baking soda or vegetable protein, or with bacteria-inhibiting essential oils, she uses lavender, tea tree, rosemary and myrrh. "This combination works for me," says urbaneden. "But there are other anti-bacterial essential oils whose scents you might prefer, including patchouli, lemongrass, geranium, and the citrus essential oils."

There are also different methods and ingredients which give deodorants their glide-on-but-not-too-mushy texture. urbaneden uses beeswax in her deodorant which helps "keep it solid in hot weather," but there are vegan products too. Searching for "vegan deodorant" turned up this item from SpaTherapy, for example.

If you are concerned about damp pits, check out items like BehaveLittles's deodorant, pictured below. She uses it herself and says, "My own underarms are soft, dry, and comfortable for the first time since junior high!"

Lotions

This customer's boyfriend got hooked on lotion, so much so that they special ordered custom extra-large size — The Tub o' Zen!

The not-so-scientifically named bunnybuttapothecary came to her Bath and Beauty business to fill "the big void that pursuing a PhD in the humanities left in the scientific half of my brain. For me, formulating and concocting my products is kind of like a cross between baking and high school chemistry — it smells good enough to eat and sometimes things explode (well, rarely, but one can dream)." The intellectually minded bunnybutt suggests that shoppers do some research on which oils work for you. "For instance, something like cocoa butter, or even shea and mango butters, will result in a thicker cream with more body (especially if they're high up on the list of ingredient). Lots of liquid oils, on the other hand, will generally produce a looser lotion that goes on a bit lighter."

bunnybuttapothecary filled me in on the difference between lotions, creams, and butters, and some of their common ingredients:

Butters — You will find that some butters to be pure butters and oils blended together (for instance, our Death by Chocolate butter will indeed be just that) and usually whipped to a creamy consistency. Products such as this contain no water and therefore do not require the ingredients which are crucial to their water-based cousins; namely, emulsifiers and preservatives. Many of the mass produced "butters" on the market today are technically thick creams.

Lotions and Creams — These can be grouped together on the grounds that they are both aqueous — meaning, water containing water — in the sense that they are an emulsion of water and oils. Creams will generally have a higher proportion of oils, but the general idea is the same.

Emulsifier — Every lotion needs an emulsifier. That's the stuff that keeps your oils and water blended together (think mayo as opposed to straight oil and vinegar dressing). Some common examples are the polysorbates (20, 60, or 80) or soy lecithin. These are derived from various sources, generally plant-based, but strict vegans may want to inquire as many common ingredients (like stearic acid, which is often used as a thickener to support an emulsion) do have variants that are derived from animal materials.

Preservatives — Another key ingredient in any water-containing moisturizer, and one that has undeservedly gotten a bad rap in recent times. There are conflicting studies on both sides of the great preservative issue, but the crux of the matter is that you simply cannot have a regular lotion or cream without some sort of preservative. Simply put, a preservative is a chemical agent that works to prevent the growth of undesirable critters in your creams (like bacteria and mold and the like). These nasties thrive in water, so any water-based product has little chance of surviving unpreserved for longer than a week or two. A preservative will generally be one of the last things on the list (most require a usage rate of less than 1% to be effective) and can be a single compound or, as is more likely, a combination of several.

So remember, as urbaneden puts it, "Unfortunately, as soon as you combine water and oil, bacteria starts to grow. So this is an area where natural is not necessarily better." ...Unless you want to treat your B&B like food that will spoil after a relatively short period of time.

Fragrance

So how do you find a fragrance just right for you over the internet? While you might want to test your nose against some common fragrances (Go ahead and sniff the roses! Sniff some scented candles at the mall!) and see what you like, you can then go to Etsy sellers who will often give you a custom experience that you can't get anywhere else.

Anhoki, a perfume seller, recommends searching for "a specific ingredient. Sandalwood, for instance." One of her best selling items is a "blend that came from an Alchemy request. It is a blend of Amber Sandalwood and Vanilla. Thanks Ami!" With fragrances, part of the fun is feeling an emotional pull to the item. Some of the perfumes and colognes on Etsy have a personal story behind them. Anhoki is inspired by "everything. My latest perfume creation is actually based on a weekend getaway I recently had with my hubby of 13 years!"

While exploring the Fragance subcategory of Bath and Beauty, keep in mind some basics. Anhoki shares some information:

Perfume —Made with a base of 90 to 95% alcohol.
Eau De Toilette — A base of 80 to 90% alcohol.
Cologne Splash — 80% or less alcohol.
Body Sprays — Usually NOT made with alcohol at all.

KreatedbyKarina filled me in on solid perfume:

Solid perfume — A unique and discreet way to make yourself smell amazing! Because they are solid they don't leak, you can carry them on a plane, and you can scent your body without spraying it everywhere else. Solid perfumes tend to come in smaller sizes, but I've used a larger tin because this way you can really access the surface better. Don't worry — it's still fashionably flat, and perfectly purse and pocket-sized so you can take it with you where ever you go. Simply rub your fingers over its silky smooth sheen to liquefy slightly and then rub your pulse points, behind your ears, over your neck — anywhere you want."

lsmith31's solid perfume is "very deep, rich and warming fragrance that is softened with a whisper of sweet vanilla." Mmmm, makes you feel like you're wearing a "comfy sweater"!

Men

Don't worry, exploring the Bath and (ahem) Beauty products for men isn't a strange Mars-like planet. You'll find a lot of the same types of items, but with a masculine look and different scents. Many of the products have a humorous twist on "macho" manly man products. I know quite a few ladies who just plain prefer these scents and quite a few dudes who "like to smell like flowers."

SeattleSundries "started making soap many years ago because I enjoy knowing how the things I use each day are made. I have continued making it because there’s always something new and interesting to try, which is amazing since the craft of soapmaking has been around for thousands of years."

If you look at her items, you see that many of them are unisex, but for some reason her "shop seems to draw a large number of men, and women buying for their men. If you’re a woman who has a husband/brother/father who is difficult to buy for (as many men seem to be), a bar of soap is great because you know they’ll use it, it’s not a big-ticket item, and (in the case of my soap) they can get a nice chuckle from the label." For some men, knowing they're already going to spend "$2.00 because the soap dish is empty, it's not too big a splurge to treat yourself to a lovely handcrafted bar…especially when they last so long compared to a bar of Ivory or Irish Spring." It's a practical luxury.

The Smooth Shave Soap was originally made for SeattleSundries' dad "because he has used a shaving mug and brush his entire life and I wanted to come up with a scented soap that he would enjoy using every day. A traditional 'wet shave' style is coming back into vogue, for whatever reason, and this bar has become very popular."

urbaneden adds, "My husband has coarse, rough facial hair. When we first met, my face would get red and raw from rubbing against him when we nuzzled. Now that he uses Smooth Face Shaving Soap, the nuzzling is better." So ladies, there's something in it for you too!

Super Duper Mexican Style Recipe: Tex Mex Skillet (Takes only 20 minutes to make)

This recipe takes 20 minutes total to make and is completely yummy. My kids even really enjoyed it. I made the meat mixture and then wrapped it up burrito style in wheat tortillas and mmm-good (especially if you enjoy Mexican food)

8 ounces ground pork (we used ground turkey)
4 ounces chorizo (find it in most grocery stores in the meat section)
1 10 ounce can diced tomatoes and green chilies, undrained (international section)
1 cup frozen whole kernel corn
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup chopped red sweet pepper
1 cup uncooked instant rice (I used Uncle Bens brown rice in a bag)
1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack Cheese (I used Mexican blend Cheese-Monterey Jack and Cheddar combined)
Wheat or Flour tortillas

1. In a large skillet cook pork and sausage until meat is brown. Drain off fat. Stir in undrained tomatoes and chilies, corn, water, and sweet pepper. Bring to a boil.

2. Stir in uncooked rice into mixture in skillet. Remove skillet from heat. Top with cheese. Cover and let stand about 5 minutes or until rice is tender. If desired, serve in flour tortillas.

I try to be healthy and eat healthy as much as possible. I love trying new recipes and I have found this one to be very simple to make and extremely tasty. If you like Chinese style food and shrimp, you're in for a real treat...

CASHEW-COCONUT SHRIMP STIR FRY

Saute 2 minced garlic cloves in 1 tsp peanut oil over medium heat for 1 minute. Add 2 cups of frozen stir fry veggies, cook for 5 minutes. Add 12 medium precooked frozen shrimp, 1/2 cup precooked microwavable brown rice and 1/3 cup light coconut milk (find it in the international aisle at the grocery store). Saute for 5-8 minutes more. Top with 1 tbs chopped cashews and 1/4 tsp light soy sauce.

So, I have tried this recipe from the healthy eating section of Health Magazine. These recipes are great! My entire family loves them. Please make sure to use fresh herbs...they DO make a difference.

Steak Frites

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 32 minutes
Makes 4 servings

1 lb peeled baking potatoes, cut into 1/4" thick strips
1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
3/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 c red wine vinegar
1 tbs whole grain-Dijon mustard, plus more for serving
2 tsp coarse black pepper
2 tsp chopped fresh thyme
1 lb lean flank steak
2 tsp freshly minced parsley

1. Preheat oven to 450*. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.
2. Toss potatoes with oil: add rosemary and 1/2 tsp salt. Place in a single layer on baking sheet. Bake 2-22 minutes or until golden, tossing halfway through. Remove from oven, and gently loosen with spatula: keep warm.
3. Place oven rack at highest position; preheat broiler. Coat a broiler pan with cooking spray.
4. Whisk together the vinegar, mustard, pepper, thyme and remaining 1/4 tsp salt in a large dish. Add steak and marinate at room temp 20 minutes, turning occassionally. Broil for 6-7 minutes per side or to desired degree of doneness. Remove from oven. Divide into 4 sections. Garnish with parley.

The Best Remedies for the COLD and FLU Season

It's almost February and the weather is still moist and cold outside. Cold and Flu season is still in full effect. If you are like me, I would bet that you or a family member has been sick this season with the cold or flu. I am happy to share some great tips on how to beat or atleast cut down that cold/flu in half the time.

Last week I had an extremely nasty sinus infection, which prevented me from doing any of my normal activities. I wondered how long I would be laying on the couch with a huge box of tissues by my side. I wanted to go grocery shopping and go out to eat with my family, but, my nose wouldn't stop running. My head ached with constant pressure and my sinuses were screaming at me. I got my butt off the couch and decided to search the internet for a cure. I knocked that nasty little sinus infection out in 3-1/2 days. Amen!

Here are some tips (and I hope you never have to use them), but, if you do.....here it goes:

Apple Cider Vinegar Drink

Add 1/4 cup of organic apple cider vinegar to 2 cups of water. This next part, I cannot stress enough......CHUG, CHUG, CHUG! This is not the most appetizing concoction, but it works....trust me! You must do this 2 times a day. It is most efficient when taken at the first sign of a cold, but, it is worth it. It is extremely sour and very vinegary so please drink as fast as you can.
You can buy organic apple cider vinegar at any health food store, some grocery stores carry organic also.

Manuka Honey

My momma always knew how to take care of us kids when we were sick. When we would have a sore throat mixed with a bad cough, she would give us a warm drink that would soothe our throats and really help stop the coughing.

Recycling Your Coffee Tips:

Did you know that coffee is extremely beneficial for your plants? The good news is, that you can use coffee grinds as a soil additive by adding dried coffee grinds to soil and turning over soil then mulching.

Many plants especially like coffee grinds mixed into their base soil. Plants like roses and vegetables like tomatoes will do well with coffee grinds. Also plants that like acid soil such as gardenias, azaleas, etc. will also like coffee grinds.

Do you ever have left over coffee sitting in your coffee pot? Well, now it doesn’t have to go down the drain. Here are two different ways to put that left over coffee to good use:

Hot Coffee can be sprayed directly on most insects and will kill them without damaging the plants. When you spray with the hot coffee, water is cooled down upon contact with the air enough to damage the insects but not the plants. Insects require only a small change in the body temp to die. Hot coffee will also damage fungus spores upon contact.

COFFEE CAKE RECIPE-

2 cups flour
11/2 cups sugar
11/4 teaspoons baking soda
11/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup cocoa, plus additional for dusting pan
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup vegetable oil
11/4 cups cold, strong brewed coffee
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, sift dry ingredients together.
Add remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly.
Grease 9-by-13-inch pan, then dust with additional cocoa.
Pour in batter. Bake 30 to 40 minutes.
Test with a tooth pick to make sure it is done.

SUPER YUMMY ICED COFFEE DRINK

I am a huge Starbucks Fan, but I live so far away from any Starbucks. Seems strange because they are conveniently located on every corner now-a-days. Not if you live in the boonies. So, with my culinary background, I was able to come up with my own iced coffee recipe.

You can use an espresso machine or a regular coffee maker so this. (I use my coffee maker)

I fill the coffee maker with water to the 2 cup line. I add about 3 tablespoons of Raw sugar in the glass coffee container (so that it dissolves when the coffee is dispensing). I fill the entire filter with "House Blend" Ground Coffee Beans

Once the coffee is done, you fill a 16 ounce glass with crushed ice cubes. I like to add a teaspoon of vanilla or caramel coffee syrup to the glass. Then, you want to add powdered coffee creamer (about 1/2 cup) to the coffee/sugar mixture and stir well.

Pour the coffee over halfway full in your 16 oz drinking glass. Then fill to the top with either half & half, soy milk or rice milk (I completely love soy milk). Top with whipped cream. You can sprinkle with cinnamon, chocolate or caramel syrup (the kind you get for ice cream) and viola you have your own iced coffee drink.

A girl (who wishes to remain anonymous) emailed us with her scary story. We wanted to publish this story, in hopes that it may help some people realize what others can be capable of. Please protect yourself, so that this doesn't happen to you.

My friend and I decided to have a girls night out one Friday night. It turned out to be a horrible night for me, probably for her too. We had decided to go to a quaint, little bar. Not to get wild, but just to relax and have a little fun. This kid about our age (21-24) kept coming to our table and asking us questions. You know, questions that guys ask when they are interested in “getting to know you”. I was totally ignoring him and paying more attention to my midori sour. He wouldn’t take a hint and kept blabbing away about his family and blah blah blah. He finally left our table and we were like so excited because of his departure. We kept drinking and I got up to dance a couple of times. My drink never left the table and neither did my friend. She never got up to do anything but go to the bathroom a couple of times, but I was always at the table when she went. We had some of the same guys that were hanging out with and coming up to our table asking us to dance. We rejected all of them because they were total losers. We partied all the way until closing time and by that time we had a good buzz going on.

Time to leave the bar…dun, dun, dun.

We got into my Rodeo and I drove about a ½ mile down the road and had to turn back. My vision started getting very blurry at a rapid speed. I still can’t believe that I made it back to the bar safely. I told my friend…”Go inside and get someone to help, I can’t drive”. I then went into the backseat of my car and laid down. At that time my sight went totally blind and I started puking like crazy. I could hear everything around me perfectly well but my body went into a paralyzed state. I got so scared because I had never felt this way after drinking. And trust me, I have a good 6 years of drinking under my belt. My body would only respond if I needed to throw up and then I could push my head out the door. Other than that, I was helpless. I probably puked a good 10 times before and after I got home. I heard and could comprehend conversation in the car. I couldn’t talk, move or see anything. It’s like being in a vegetable state and having no control over you own self.

We arrived safely at my house and I had to be carried into the house. I was put on my couch with throw up all over me. My brother came down to see what was going on and by the looks of me, he thought I was dead. I was carried upstairs to my room and went to sleep. I again threw up all over myself and I could’ve died just from inhaling it. The morning came too slow for me.

I woke up and felt fine except for the fact that I stunk horribly. I remembered everything that happened to me and was puzzled. I talked to as many people as I could about my night at the bar. Everyone thinks that I was drugged and probably by a drug called ruffies. I have since read stories about the date rape drug and I too believe that was the case. It is scary to think that someone could do something that horrible to another person. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through what I had to encounter. Especially if there were other intentions involved.

Spring Cleaning Was Never So Simple-

Oh, But Now It Is A Breeze

We have five tips to share with you this month. Using these tips regularly has made our lives a little bit easier every year.

KITCHEN STORAGE Keep your kitchen storage area or pantry organized and bug free. Investing in some see through, squared food containers can really make a difference. Not only are they practical, but they also keep your food organized and keep pesky insects from invading your food. Make sure the containers are see through, that way when you go to use them, you can see what you are looking for. If you use round containers, they take up too much room, so make sure they are squared. These containers are great for storing sugar, cereal, flour and more. And, best of all, most of these containers can be found at your local dollar store.

ERASING GREASE & STAINS Scrubbing off left over grime and grease from cooking can be a pain. Trying to get your childrens crayon drawings of the walls is almost as bad. We have found a product that works just like magic and it is sooo easy to use. Mr Clean Magic Eraser can be found at your local grocery store and is well worth the money, time and effort of cleaning those tough messes. You can use these Magic Erasers on practically any surface and those “pesky problems” will soon be gone with the flick of your wrist.

CARPET MISHAPS We have 3 small children and a new puppy, so our carpets don’t look brand new at all times. I have found a solution that works very good for our carpet problems. I like to mix 1 part Natures Miracle (can be found at your local pet store) with 1 part Peroxide together in a spray bottle. I like to spray my soiled carpet areas and scrub them to release the soiled area from sticking to my carpet. I let the mixture sit on my carpet for about 20 minutes and then do my regular shampooing of my carpet. I have had really great luck with this method as it gets pet stains, juice stains and much more from staining my carpet.
Keep in mind that my carpet is a very light tan color. If your carpet is medium to dark in color, I would suggest not using this as it may lighten your carpet. You will want to conduct a test on a very small piece of carpet to see how it works for you (maybe in the corner of a closet).

CRISP, CLEAR DISHES Are your dishes coming out of the dishwasher looking a little milky or do you have mineral build up in your dishwasher? Instead of paying a repair person to come out, try using Vinegar first. Put all your dirty dishes in the dishwasher and then let the dishwasher run (just until it has started the wash cycle). Stop your dishwasher and then add 4 ounces of Vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher and leave it overnight. The vinegar acts like an acid and starts “eating away” the build up in the dishwasher. In the morning, let the dishwasher run its regular cycle. If you don’t have a soft water system, you may want to use the vinegar bath once a month to keep the build up to a minimum.

USING GOOD SCENTS In my household, lighting a candle or two has always symbolized that my work is done. Raw Beauty has created several soy candles and tarts so that we have a scent that is great for everyone. You can actually dip your fingers into the melted wax and use the wax as a moisturizing lotion. Soy wax melts cool, so it will not burn you when the wax has turned to liquid. It is very beneficial to use on the hard working areas of your body, such as your hands, feet, elbows and knees. Our Soy Candles are hand-poured using real Soy Wax. Soy Wax melts cool so it is safer around children and it has a much longer burn time. Soy Wax actually lasts 2-3 times longer than Paraffin candles. Our wicks are also natural cotton and contain no harmful lead. These zinc and lead-free wicks are much healthier to use because they don’t produce harmful black smoke. Using Soy Wax and natural cotton wicks also contribute to our American farmers.

Freshly Prepared Strawberry Facial Cleanser Recipe:

Strawberries are in season and now is the time to use them to freshen up your skin. Strawberries are rich in vitamins A and C. They are also very mild, which makes them perfect for facial skin.

6 whole strawberries (cleaned)
2 tablespoons almond oil (omit if you have oily skin)
3 tablespoons of witch hazel (can buy from your grocery store or pharmacy)

Place all ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a clean jar and cover. Keep in refrigerator. You will want to use this mixture in place of your facial cleanser.

Prep time: 15 min. Baking time: 18-22 min. Decoration time: 15 min. Difficulty: Easy

What you'll need:
• 1 bag Hershey's Chocolate Kisses
• 1 bag M&M’S® Brand Milk Chocolate Candies for Valentine’s Day
• 1 18-oz. box your favorite cake mix
• 2 12-oz. cans whipped vanilla frosting
• Red food coloring
• 3/4 cup heart-shaped sprinkles (available in your grocery store’s baking section)

• 24 paper cupcake liners
• 2 12-cup muffin tins

What to do:
1. For standard cupcake tins-Line the muffin tins with paper cupcake liners.
Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the package.

2 cups sparkling mineral water or seltzer water
Juice from one lemon (may substitute for one orange, one grapefruit, or one lime)
2-3 drops of peppermint oil
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. After you have cleansed yourself, apply mixture with a sponge or shower pouf all over your body (from head to toe). Rinse off with tepid water and pat your skin dry.

Happy Holidays Everyone...

This has been such an exciting year for all of us here at Raw Beauty. Not only have we met such wonderful people along our journey, we have also made great friends too. We have been able to donate over $1400 worth of products to the Project Angel Food Organization to help feed men, women and children who are living with HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses. We also donated shoes, personal grooming products, and toys to homeless children at the Giving Tree Organization, so that they will have a better Christmas this year.

Raw Beauty company members stayed in Santa Monica, California on November 30th-December 1st, 2005. We were there for Project Angel Food & Divine Design's "Shop in The Name Of Love" Charity Event. The first night was called "Awards Preview Night". Formal dress, good cocktails, wonderful food, celebrities and lots of shopping to do. They announced 2005 charitable celebrities,which were Ryan Seacrest and Ticha
Campbell.

The 2nd night was called "VIP Shopping Party". This event featured finger foods, cocktails and a show from Cirque Du Soleil...Another side of Zumanity. And of course, shopping!!

Oooh La La-Cranberry Mousse Recipe

Cranberry Mousse Recipe
About 20 minutes Prep Time
Makes about 12 (1/2 cup) servings
This is a 2 Step Recipe

Ingredients for Step 1:
1/2 an 8 oz package of softened cream cheese
2 tbs sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup frozen cranberry juice concentrate, thawed
1-16 oz can of whole cranberry sauce

Ingredients for Step 2:
1 cup fresh cranberries
1/3 cup sugar
2 tbs water

Recipe for Step 1:
In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese with an electric mixer on med speed for about 30 seconds. Beat in sugar and vanilla until smooth. Slowly add cranberry concentrate, beating until very smooth. In a small bowl, stir the whole cranberry sauce to remove any lumps and set aside.

In a chilled large mixing bowl, beat whipping cream with an electric mixer on low to med speed until soft peaks form. Fold about half the cranberry sauce and half the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until combined. Fold in the remaining cranberry sauce and whipped cream.

Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate up to 24 hours (stir before serving if chilled). To serve, sppon fluff into a large serving bowl and spoon topping (step 2 recipe) on to just before serving.

Recipe for Step 2 (Topping):
In a medium skillet, combine 1 cup fresh cranberries, 1/3 cup sugar and 2 tbs water. Cook and stir over med heat until sugar is dissolved and cranberries just begin to pop. Remove from heat. Cover and chill until serving time.

We cannot tell you how honored we are to be apart of the Project Angel Food Fundraising Event this year. Project Angel Food Cooks and Delivers over 1200 meals per day to families who are struggling with HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses. Raw Beauty has generously donated $1400 worth of Raw Beauty products to help raise money for this wonderful cause.

The Event "Shop in The Name of Love" is going to be held November 30th- December 5th at the Barker Hanger Airport in Santa Monica, California. One of Project Angel Food's client profiles touched our hearts. Sharon has been receiving meals and nutritional assistance from Project Angel Food for over two years. Her chronic illness was beginning to interfere with her ability to care for her children, Janayn, 15 and Muneer, 11. "I didn't want to burden my children and make them grow up too quickly by giving them the responsibility of cooking because I was too sick to cook," Sharon says. She asserts that the nutritional components of Project Angel Food meals, specifically designed for each client, make all the difference. Cappuccino Cheesecake Recipe For the Holidays

Tis' The Season for Yummy Desserts...and have we got the yummiest recipe for you! As you may know, I went to culinary school back in the day. One of my favorite dessert recipes was this Cappuccino Cheesecake. I am very picky about my cheesecake also, because I do not like it to be too rich (then I don't get to enjoy it). This recipe will knock your socks off with it's wonderful flavoring. Not too rich, but oh so delightful.
1-1/4 Cups Graham Cracker Crumbs
1/4 cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 ounces butter, melted
12 ounces cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/3 cup espresso, strong brewedInstructions: Prepare crust by combining the crumbs, brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter. Press into the bottom of a 10" springform pan. Beat the creamcheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Beat in the espresso, beating until smooth. Pour filling onto the crust. Bake 35 minutes at 375 degrees. Cool Overnight. Serve with whipped cream topped with cinnamon and cocoa powder (if desired).

Halloween Fun: Makin' Easy Spider Web Candy Apples

Tasty Halloween Treats that are fun & yummy for everyone!

Enjoy-Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!

What you'll need to get started:

4 Apples 4 Wooden Sticks 8-10 Large Marshmallows 1/2 tablespoon of butter or margarine 1/2 cup Rice Krispy Cereal 1 Tbs of Halloween Sprinkles (optional)

Wash apples well-then put a wooden stick into each apple.
Add marshmallows & butter in a microwave safe bowl. Heat in the microwave on HIGH for about 15 seconds. Stir. Heat for another 10 seconds and stir. The marshmallows should be smooth and ready to pour, if not, heat in 10 second intervals until ready.
While the marshmallow's are still very hot, dip each apple individually into the marshmallow (you might need to re-heat in the microwave for a few seconds if marshmallow starts to get stiff). Roll each in crispy rice, then set on a wax paper covered cookie sheet about 1-2" apart.
Reheat any leftover marshmallows (you may need to add one or two). Drizzle remaining marshmallow over apples (with a spoon) this will give them a "spiderweb" look. While still hot, put sprinkles on the coating- (if desired)
Allow to cool completely before serving. Kids and adults will love these yummy and sticky Halloween treats.

Please make sure you do your breast examination's on a monthly basis.
IN THE SHOWER Fingers flat, move gently over every part of each breast. Use your right hand to examine left breast, left hand for right breast. Check for any lump, hard knot or thickening. Carefully observe any changes in your breasts. BEFORE A MIRROR Inspect your breasts with arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead. Look for any changes in contour of each breast, a swelling, a dimpling of skin or changes in the nipple. Then rest palm on hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match - few women's breasts do. LYING DOWN Place pillow under right shoulder, right arm behind your head. With fingers of left hand flat, press right breast gently in small circular motions, moving vertically or in a circular pattern covering the entire breast. Use light, medium and firm pressure. Squeeze nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

Oh So Yummy Iced Coffee Drink: Free Recipe

SUPER YUMMY ICED COFFEE DRINK YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME

I am a huge Starbucks Fan, but I live so far away from any Starbucks. Seems strange because they are conveniently located on every corner now-a-days. Not if you live in the boonies. So, with my culinary background, I was able to come up with my own iced coffee recipe.

You can use an espresso machine or a regular coffee maker so this. (I use my coffee maker)

I fill the coffee maker with water to the 2 cup line. I add about 3 tablespoons of Raw sugar in the glass coffee container (so that it dissolves when the coffee is dispensing). I fill the entire filter with "House Blend" Ground Coffee Beans (Starbucks of course).

Once the coffee is done, you fill a 16 ounce glass with crushed ice cubes. I like to add a teaspoon of vanilla or caramel coffee syrup to the glass. Then, you want to add powdered coffee creamer (about 1/2 cup) to the coffee/sugar mixture and stir well. Pour the coffee over halfway full in your 16 oz drinking glass. Then fill to the top with either half & half, soy milk or rice milk (I completely love soy milk). Top with whipped cream. You can sprinkle with cinnamon, chocolate or caramel syrup (the kind you get for ice cream) and viola you have your own iced coffee drink.

Now let me tell you some benefits of soy milk and why it is so important in my life:

I have problems drinking cow's milk. It gives me a really upset stomach. I figured I would try soy milk and fell in love.

Soy is the only vegetable source of protiein that's complete. It provides you with all the essential amino acids your body needs. It is also is a source of calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin B. Soy milk is also non-dairy. ENJOY a glass of soy milk today.

Super Yummy Bellini Drink Recipe

BELLINI RECIPE

We came across a delightful bellini recipe that is sure to uplift your spirits!

1/2 cup grenadine
1/4 cup sugar
1 bottle sparkling cider (such as Martinelli's-for non alcoholic)
-or-
1 bottle champagne
8 ounces chilled peach-fruit nectar (such as Ceres Fruitree)

Dip the edges of 2 empty champagne glasses into a small bowl of grenadine, then dip glass rim into a bowl of sugar. You now have a pretty sugar rim glass.

Fill each glass 3/4 of the way with cider (or champagne), 3 tablespoons of fruit nectar and serve.

*Traditional bellini drinks are made with peach nectar, but you can substitute any fruit nectar you like.

Pampering your facial skin can be very beneficial. This facial mask is easy to prepare in your own home. Honey helps rejuvinate damaged skin tissue. Honey has natural antiseptic properties that also aid with acne. Egg Yolk contains lecithin, an antioxidant. Vitamin E helps heal skin and slows down the aging process. After using this mask, your skin should feel softer and smoother.
Ingredients:
1 egg yolk
1 tsp honey
1 tsp vitamin E oil

All of us really Can Make A Difference! Raw Beauty has donated several items to Crafters Revolution through Etsy.com to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
